Observance of World Down Syndrome Day: Improving Our Support Systems
On March 21, 2025, Ability Bhutan Society (ABS), in collaboration with Dechenchholing Higher Secondary School and Sherabgatshel Primary School observed World Down Syndrome Day under the theme “Improve Our Support Systems.” Both schools are inclusive schools providing Special Educational Needs (SEN) programs for children with diverse disabilities, playing a vital role in promoting inclusion and awareness.
The program began with the Principal of Sherabgatshel Primary School highlighting the objectives of the program, emphasizing the need for stronger support systems for children with Down syndrome. The Executive Director of ABS then addressed the gathering, underscoring the importance of the day and stressing that inclusion must begin at home to build a truly supportive and understanding society.
Following this, an ABS documentary video titled “Breaking Disability Myth” was shown to the participants. The documentary aimed to challenge misconceptions about disabilities and emphasized the importance of early intervention, inclusion, and community support.
After the screening, the engagement program was held from 2:00 to 5:30 PM, featuring interactive and inclusive activities for children and parents. Games such as Musical Chair, the Blowing Game, and Fire on the Mountain (Number Grouping) created a joyful and engaging atmosphere, fostering participation and social interaction among children.
The event continued with an interactive session where parents and teachers from both schools engaged in discussions led by ABS social workers. The session focused on enhancing SEN support structures, sharing best practices, and addressing challenges in inclusive education. The Principal of Dechencholing Higher Secondary School delivered a heartfelt Vote of Thanks, appreciating the collaborative effort in strengthening support systems for children with Down syndrome.
The observance concluded with tea and refreshments, reinforcing the spirit of togetherness and commitment to fostering an inclusive society. The involvement of DHSS and Sherabgatshel Primary School highlights the collective effort to create a nurturing and supportive environment for children with diverse disabilities.
