“Advancing Neurodiversity and UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”.

On 2nd April, every year, Ability Bhutan Society pause to acknowledge and celebrate World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD) for the children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), together with their parents, caregivers and well-wishers.

Since 2007 World Autism Awareness Day has been acknowledge annually on this date by the United Nations Assembly. This has been established to promote the full realization of the basic human rights and fundamental freedom for Autistic Individuals ensuring their equal participation in society.

This year’s theme, ‘Advancing Neurodiversity and UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)’ highlights how inclusive policies and practices can drive positive change for Autistic people worldwide.

As an annual event to promote community awareness on Autism, ABS will Light it Blue and shine our important landmark in the capital city of Thimphu, the Memorial Chhoeten, toward later this evening to advocate the day and more importantly to garner community recognition and support for inclusion of the persons with disabilities in general and the Autistic individual in particular.

As per the recent statistic, the prevalence of Autism among children are the highest among our society, compared to other invisible disabilities, such as Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Delays, among others.

ABS request the compassionate Bhutanese society to join us in spirit and prayers to observe the day to make it inclusive of everyone and celebrate the differences.

The program was supported by ABS/BMZ/DAHW, Germany Project.

Note: We are grateful for all the parents and private individuals who showed up, supported and contributed in their little ways for the program.
